Abstract
In England, Health Action Zones were established to develop innovative approaches to reducing health inequalities in some of the most disadvantaged areas. Since New Labour came into power, there has been a proliferation of area based initiatives and programmes aimed at regenerating deprived communities, reducing poverty and social exclusion. These
initiatives are expected to make a contribution to turning the tide of growing inequality in health. The purposes of paper are as follows. It outlines the development of HAZs and their main features, then describes the activities and evaluations on the performance of North Staffordshire¡¯s HAZs as a case study. Then its implications for the Korean health care sector are discussed.
